In 1875 & 1876 James Rickards was vice captain of Carlton Imperials and scored 10 goals.
1876 Jas. Rickards was playing for Carlton Imperials.
The Footballer 1876 had this to say about him;
"Goal sneak, a splendid kick either foot, should be played back occasionally, second for the Challenge Cup with 60.5 yards."
1877 Wants the qualification of speed to make a really fine forward, otherwise, is not easily surpassed, his drop kicking is first class, second for the First Twenty drop kick with 64 yards. (58.52 Meters)

1878 Has not improved much in speed, but very handy when pressed, being a neat and expert dodger, and kick.

Jas Rickards was runner-up in a drop kick competition to J. Maher of Fitzroy held at the Melfort Running grounds.
Rickards kicked 60 yards 2 inches and won 3 sovereigns ($ 3.30)
The winning drop kick went 61 yards 9 inches.
1895 May 04
Former Carlton player J. Rickards umpired the North Hobart v Kingston match and impressed the locals.

"The old Carlton player, Jim Rickards who for many years has been one of the League goal umpires, is going to South Africa."
