Game Review
A famous game in League history when Peter Knights, the high-flying Hawk was opposed by a skinny wet-behind-the-ears kid named Stephen Silvagni. Knights produced some magnificent marks and prevailed with 9 goals but SOS pulled in several "speckies " of his own to convince all present that he would be every bit as good as his opponent one day soon. The Blues could not muster a single multiple goalkicker all game.
David Rhys-Jones was reported for striking Michael Tuck but found not guilty.
Carlton coach David Parkin described Saturday as a dirty day for the Blues, the seniors and reserves trounced by Hawthorn. However, there were encouraging signs for the Blues, especially in relation to young defender Stephen Silvagni. Carlton started the 17-year old on Peter Knights and the duel in the first quarter was not only fascinating, but also spectacular. It was as if both were trying to outdo each other with brilliant high-marking. Of course, Knights eventually got on top and Silvagni was shifted from the Hawk champion. Parkin later paid tribute to Silvagni by describing him as one young player who did not know the meaning of not having a go. Silvagni showed several touches of brilliance and his marking was superb. It is only natural at this stage of his career that he will be outfoxed by older players, but that is part of the learning process. However, Silvagni does look a star of the future. Incidentally, Saturday was the first time he had played in a losing senior side. - Jim Main Inside Football.
