Game Review
Carlton outscored its arch rival by 2 goals in the opening quarter and maintained that lead to half time. A 4 goal to 1 third quarter put the Blues in control and they then kicked 8 goals to 2 in the final term to more than double the Magpies score. Collingwood needed to win this game to have any chance of making the finals but the Blues put an end to that and gave them their worst loss of the season.
Lance Whitnall returned to form, kicking 5 goals. He was well supported at ground level by Matthew Lappin with 3 and Ryan Houlihan with 2. In the midfield, Brett Ratten had 30 possessions, Jim Plunkett 26 and 2 goals and Anthony Koutoufides had 25 and 2 goals, going head to head with Buckley. Adrian Hickmott with 19 and a goal received the 3 Brownlow votes. Stephen Silvagni and Andrew McKay were solid in defence.
