Game Review
The improving Blues fielded their youngest-ever team, and narrowly defeated Richmond after this even, spirited contest at Princes Park. This Carlton side had an average age of 22 years and 15 days, and overall it would average over 90 games at the top level, with seven players managing 100 games; Ian Collins, Barry Gill, Kevin Hall, Wes Lofts, John Nicholls, Maurie Sankey and Serge Silvagni. Prior to this match, only Nicholls and Silvagni had played 100 games, with Collins, Collis, Lofts and Sankey over the 50 game mark.
Although Carlton were on top early in the game, Richmond fought back well to lead in the third quarter and expected to go and win. However, the Blues came back in the last quarter to win a close match by 3 points. Deciding factor in the critical last term was the powerful Carlton ruck, John Nicholls striking his best form for the season. - Football Record.

Richmond's full-back Fred Swift grabbed the behind post to stop himself.
The post was pulled out of the ground and one of Carlton's trainers had the job of holding it upright for the remainder of the match.
Note: Padding on the post which was introduced into the VFL this year.
The Bendigo Football League had used padded posts a number of years earlier.
