A local Carlton boy who played his junior footy at the ovals adjacent to Princes Park for the Princes Hill FC. Alan Hamilton was a very classy on-baller who played in the back-to-back U/19's premierships (1978 & 1979). Hamilton was promoted to the reserves during the 1979 season whilst playing in the U/19's, he would also play one full season of reserve grade football for the Blues in the 1980 season. Sometimes timing is everything and Alan Hamilton's time at Carlton was that to his detriment to break in the strong Carlton senior team. Due to a glut of small men and the Blues famed "mosquito fleet" of that era, his opportunities were very limited and therefore he was competing for a senior game with players who would be all time greats at Carlton.

During the finals series in the 1980 season Hamilton would play in a State Representative match at the MCG, he would play in a Combined Interstate Representative Team that was posed to a very strong Victorian Representative Team. This was played midway through the VFL final series at the MCG, refer to the squads listed below. The State of Origin clashes were to be held at the end of the season so this game was to provide players in the Big V squad not playing finals to have a hit-out. Other current current and former Carlton players in this game included Mark Hegarty, Geoff Ironmonger and Leigh McConnon.

At the end of the 1980 season he was delisted and then spent the 1981 season playing in Queensland for Sandgate under ex North Melbourne premiership player Frank Gumbleton. In 1982, Alan Hamilton came back to Melbourne and played with local VFA club Brunswick where he joined up with ex Blues U/19's premiership and reserves' team mates David Whillas, Stephen Buckley and Robert Lawson amongst others. Hamilton would play with Brunswick during the 1983 and 1984 seasons, including playing in the 1983 2nd Division Grand Final loss with Wickers. During the 1984 season he became ill with glandular fever which he had suffered with for at least 16 months which had a significant impact on his ability to train and play football at Brunswick.
