Another early Blue whose personal details have been lost in the mists of time, Harry Couper Pye was born in Carlton in 1880. Twenty years later he was playing football for St Luke’s in a local churches competition, before he found his way to Princes Park and launched a brief VFL career.
Carlton was a struggling team in those far-off days, and anyone with above-average ability was welcomed with open arms. Harry must have shown something, because he was included in the Blues’ line-up for the opening round of the 1901 season, and went on to play 14 matches, including Carlton’s only two wins for the year - against South Melbourne and St Kilda in rounds 4 and 5. He spent most of those games in Carlton’s forward line, but kicked only one career goal - against Geelong at Princes Park in his third match.
In 1902, one of the most significant chapters in Carlton’s history began with the appointment of ex-Fitzroy champion Jack Worrall as Secretary of the club. In effect, Worrall had become the first paid coach of a VFL team, and it wasn’t long before his discipline shook up the Blues’ playing list like never before. Pye played in the first two matches of the new season, before abruptly departing as Worrall ruthlessly culled the list.
After that, the rest of Harry’s sporting and personal life remains a mystery, aside from the fact that he passed away in St Kilda on the 13th March 1953, aged 72.
