Game Review
"Twelve minutes before the game against Collingwood was due to start, Carlton players were on the ground warming up with four footballs, despite the League rule banning the practice.When field umpire Sheales came onto the ground eight minutes later, he found Carlton captain-coach Ron Barassi charging towards him at full stretch trying to gather in one of the illegal balls.
Sheales told Barassi he was offending, but Barassi seemed reluctant to give up the ball. Finally, he nonchalantly kicked it towards the grandstand goal - and it rolled through to the delight of the crowd."

This loss was the final nail in the coffin of Carlton's finals hopes. Now seventh, we were two wins and percentage shy of finals contention.
Magpies strong finish
This game at Princes Park produced some brilliant football, with little between Carlton and Collingwood in general play. The Magpies won because of their more positive attack, and their ability to seize every scoring opportunity. by contrast, the Blues were unsettled on the forward line and wilted before the strong Collingwood defence. Ray Gabelich rucked superbly and capped off his best performance for the season with 4 goals. His battle with John Nicholls was a highlight of the match in which both ruckmen toiled tirelessly. Ian Montgomery once again defended brilliantly for Collingwood. He rarely makes a mistake and makes the resting rover battle for every kick. Colin Tully teamed perfectly in attack and tenacious Mick Bone played his usual excellent team game. Ian Graham played cleverly at full-forward and kicked 4 goals. Sergio Silvagni battled relentlessly for Carlton and used his strength to good effect in a great performance. Garry Crane and Cliff Stewart were too fast for their opponents on the wings. Ron Barassi played well early, but tired in the second half. Berkeley Cox once again produced his customary solid game for 100 minutes. - Football Record.
