Game Review
Despite some early season hope-raising, the Blues went in to this cellar-dwelling Round 18 clash in 16th place, versus the Lions' 18th place. At selection the Blues made 5 changes through form and injury; Harry McKay would debut and he would be joined by the returning Williamson, Macreadie, Cuningham and Thomas. They would take the place of Boekhorst & Sumner (omitted) and the injured Alex Silvagni, Byrne and Buckley.Well, the opening quarter was our worst for many years. Despite a couple of early entries and promising shots on goal to Wright and Casboult, what we saw was a lethargic Carlton outfit versus a hard running Lions midfield. Goal after goal versus miskick after miskick told the story, and we were down by 33 at the first break.
The second was even worse. The only real highlight was a mark and checkside debut goal to Harry McKay.
In the third consecutive goals to Cuningham, Wright, Graham and Petrevski-Seton gave us some sort of fool's hope of a win against the bottom team, before the giving away of 50 metre penalties by Petrevski-Seton and Docherty seemed to kill off any momentum we had.
We would surge again early in the last with consecutive goals to Curnow, Simpson and Curnow again before the Lions calmed it down and pulled away again. We were within 11 but really were so far off it in the first half that it was a super generous margin. Alas, at the end, the Lions settled and managed to win by 30 points.
