Game Review
Carlton lost this Round 3 fixture by 24 points in a disappointing game that looked far worse during it than the final margin suggested. The Blues, now 0 and 3, were sitting at the bottom of the ladder with a long injury list and little cohesion in the ones.At selection the Blues welcomed back Kreuzer and Kennedy, omitting O'Shea and losing Byrne to a quadriceps injury.
Special K was a welcomed site for Blues fans, particularly against gun Pie ruck Brodie Grundy. The Blues would score the first three goals from impressive pressure and structure, seemingly learning from the prior week's loss. Dale Thomas kicked the first from the top of the square - his 150th AFL goal - before a neat snap to Garlett and a strong grab to Casboult was converted, and we were out!
The Pies seemingly snuck back in to it with two 'over the back' goals to Hoskin-Elliott, but for most of the first quarter it felt as though we had their measure. Two additional Pies goals to end the term were an insight in to the onslaught that would follow, with 10 majors in a row to the Pies seemingly killing off any spirit the Blues had.
We would fight hard in the third and fourth but never really threaten, and again some consolation goals at the end made this '8 goal loss' half that on the scoreboard.
Many eyes will be on the Round 1 VFL game where the Northern Blues had a number of players returning from injury who could be looked at to assist the ailing seniors - Lobbe, Lang and Shaw all come to mind. Unfortunately that team went down by 20 goals in their season opener, and a sense of bewilderment seemed to be present over most fans in the outer...
