Game Review

Revisit Rounds 01 An easy win to Carlton, doubling St Kilda’s score, mainly came as a result of Carlton’s long kicking and strong marking game, in contrast to St Kilda’s overdone short passing, which Carlton was easily able to control. Except for the first quarter and part of the third, the rest of the game was a superb exhibition of football by Carlton.

‘Soapy’ Vallence kicked another 5 goals, and lively acquisition Rod Leffanue added another three, in his first game after joining Carlton from South Melbourne. This big victory lifted the Blues into the top four for the first time in 1933, and boosted our percentage to 110.3. Richmond, Geelong, Carlton and Footscray made up the new top four, with Fitzroy and South Melbourne one win outside.

Carlton announced three changes on Thursday night. Captain Frank Gill was out suspended, Joe Kelly was injured and Jack Cooper was omitted. Into the side came Oprey, Johnson and Park. Prior to the game, two more changes were made. Gordon Mackie was out with a hip injury and Jack Hale was to miss after a death in his family. Rod Leffenue, ex South Melbourne, was called up for his Carlton debut and Ted Pollock was to play his first game of the year.

The game began with Davey sending the ball forward. A free to Johnson and a fine kick provided the first goal. St Kilda quickly responded, bringing the ball around the southern wing for a nice goal. St Kilda were quicker and the more lively side early and Carlton appeared sluggish and slow. Two more St Kilda goals came, one from a splendid high mark. The Saints’ defence was on top, but a free to Davey gave Carlton its second goal. St Kilda went forward and had two easy chances, but scored behinds from both. Great play from Shea gave Davey a chance for his second and he made no mistake. St Kilda received a free near goal on the boundary and a fine kick gave them their fourth goal. But a goal to Leffanue close to the bell tied the scores at 4-2 each at quarter time.

Davey and Bullen were quick to get on top early in the second, both taking fine marks, from which Clarke kicked Carlton’s fifth goal. Huxtable, Little and Cooper were playing well, providing plenty of forward attacks. With a kick off the ground, Oprey got the ball to Vallence who kicked his first. Cooper followed up quickly with two goals from fine work around the packs and Carlton was away. St Kilda was loose in defence, giving Carlton’s forwards too much room. St Kilda’s only goal for the quarter came from some nice scouting work. Vallence scored Carlton’s ninth goal late in term for a 27 point lead at the main break. Carlton’s direct kicking, in contrast to St Kilda’s undisciplined play and short passing, had provided a handy lead.

A behind to Carlton at the resumption was immediately answered by St Kilda, with a goal from a pack close to goal. Another goal shortly after from a kick near the boundary after some nice play gave the Saints their seventh. St Kilda had come out firing after half time and had lifted, and only fine defence from Huxtable and Gilby was preventing further scores. However, St Kilda was persisting in a short passing game, which was being held up by Carlton’s defence. A failure to shepherd each other by two St Kilda defenders allowed Clarke to pass to Leffanue who scored his second goal. St Kilda replied with some tough play and a great running goal. Then Vallence, Cooper and Shea combined well to give Shea and Vallence a goal each close to three quarter time and a 30 point lead to the Blues.

The final quarter became a procession as Carlton quickly asserted their superiority. Four unanswered goals to Leffanue, Hughson, Jack Green and Clarke strengthened their grip on the game. The result was now a foregone conclusion and Carlton started easing up, allowing St Kilda to get their ninth goal. However, two quick goals to Shea quickly increased the lead. St Kilda scored their tenth goal before Vallence kicked two late goals to give the Blues a sixty five point victory at the final bell.

At the end of this round Carlton were in 3rd spot on the ladder with a percentage of 110.3.
