Carlton, under new coach Alex Jesaulenko, bounced back into form, with a great victory against Collingwood at Victoria Park. Rover Trevor Keogh was the Blues driving force, picking up 25 kicks and using his blistering pace to good advantage. Keogh was well supported by Peter Jones, who dominated the rucking duels, setting up a lot of play for the Blues small men. - Inside Football Player of the Year.

Congratulations Jezza. The four premiership points are the most important achievement during the football season for a League coach on a Saturday afternoon and Jezza after accepting the coaching job at Carlton last week, only two days before the Blues big clash against Collingwood, led the Blues to a fantastic win. It was an enormous strain on Jezza to accept the job, but he showed what a great loyal clubman he was, and I'm sure all football supporters admire him for it.
I can't think of a better way to start a coaching career than by a win against Collingwood at Victoria Park and no matter what happens for the rest of this season or for the rest of his football career I'm sure Jezza will always remember that first match as coach. Jezza has got an extremely difficult task at Carlton, because as well as coaching he is playing. So he has got to worry about his own form as well as all his players at Carlton. But Jezza has got the temperament and ability to overcome the difficulties that face him. A League coach has to put with abuse, criticism and intense pressure, but I was pleased to see Jezza accept the challenge and take the Job at Carlton. Last Friday, I took particular notice of my TNT workmate Alex Jesaulenko. If ever a bloke was showing signs of stress it was Jezza. He'd been flung overnight into football's most exacting job, coaching. He was pale, black rings under the eyes, and looked unusually tired. Carlton players magnificent response to his appointment did highlight the great club feeling that really does typify our game. I wager that in all his career he was never more proud than when he heard the final siren blare at Victoria Park with his supposedly down-and-out side victors over the Mighty Magpies. I don't think any coach could hope for a greater debut. To see out of form players like Percy Jones and Bruce Doull come out of his football wilderness to play their hearts out for Jezza must have stirred him to the toe nails. - Gary Dempsey Inside Football''
Collingwood and Carlton met at Victoria Park last Saturday in their 171st clash and the Blues showed they are on the way back, by going on to their first win over the Magpies after three losses. The win was their 83rd while the Magpies have 84 to their credit. It was the Blues 1550th VFL game. - Football Record.
Man of the hour in League football circles is no doubt newly appointed Carlton playing coach, Alex Jesaulenko, who took his Blues to the dreaded Victoria Park on Saturday and triumphed over the long time rivals in an unexpected manner. The Blues were far too good on the day and Jezza played no small part in the win. Nor did rover Rod Ashman who was seen hugging Jezza just as the final siren sounded.
