Game Review

Carlton went into this match against South Melbourne at the Lake Oval unbeaten and full of confidence. Sure enough, after playing some brilliant football in patches, the Blues were five goals up at half-time and well in control. However, during the long break, the Swans reorganised their side, and led by their champion captain Bob Skilton, they came out for the second half playing cohesive, direct football. At three-quarter time, the difference had shrunk to just 12 points, with Carlton under intense pressure. South actually hit the front in the last few minutes, before Blues rover Terry Board took two set shots for goal in quick succession. He missed both - but levelled the scores in a just result for both teams.

South Melbourne and Carlton played a thrilling draw at the Lakeside Oval. The Blues led by five goals at half time, but could not withstand a Swans revival led by Bob Skilton. __- Football Record.

"If Carlton had had two John Nicholls it certainly would have won, and even so, the one was nearly enough. Nicholls crushed all the opposition on the rucks and powered the Blues into most of their profitable moves. Similarly, Barassi provided the rallying force that spurred his players to fight on when all seemed lost."
